SHORT SYNOPSIS

A brief look into a changing paradise

In Amed, a coastal village in Bali, five children train for a pickleball tournament as the sport begins to take root in Indonesia.

While the island struggles with mass tourism and the exploitation of its identity, the court becomes a rare symbol of connection: a space where cultures and generations meet.

Through the children’s eyes, the film asks a universal question: can play and community open the way to a more shared future?

The Social Impact

Impact Beyond the Screen

Shifting Courts serves as a transformative curriculum for the modern world. It redefines the travel experience, shifting the focus from the passive «spectator» to the active «participant.»

As a flagship selection for SFFILM’s «Schools at the Festival», the film acts as a global classroom for thousands of students. It showcases the profound value of play as a universal language—one that dismantles the barriers of tourism to reveal a shared sanctuary where every traveler can find a home.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER

David Fernández Graña is a Spanish documentary filmmaker and the founder of Banuka Studio. Based in Bilbao, his work is defined by a deep commitment to cinema as a tool for social change and education.

With an observational and humanistic lens, David explores complex themes such as community identity, segregation, and the power of culture to bridge divides.

From the Basque Country to the shores of Indonesia, his lens seeks the «human truth» that emerges when we stop traveling as tourists and start connecting as people.

For David, Shifting Courts is a tribute to the community that welcomed him and a legacy for his son, Xabi, a reminder that the world is smaller, and more connected, than we think.
