SHORT SYNOPSIS

A brief look into a changing paradise

In Amed, a quiet coastal village in Bali, five children gather around a pickleball court.

As the island grapples with the pressures of mass tourism and a shifting identity, this small patch of ground becomes something more: a place where rhythms slow down, and unexpected connections begin to emerge.

Observing the world through their eyes, Shifting Courts drifts between play and reflection, capturing a fragile moment where cultures meet, and something new quietly takes shape.

Award-Winning Documentary

"A deeply affecting film that captures the connective power of sport at its most human level, bridging backgrounds, cultures, and lived experiences. Visually striking and meticulously edited, it elevates a story that might otherwise remain unseen, delivering it with both emotional resonance and cinematic precision.”

Josh Molinari, Lead Programmer, NYU Sports Film Festival 2026

The Social Impact

Impact Beyond the Screen

Shifting Courts serves as a transformative curriculum for the modern world. It redefines the travel experience, shifting the focus from the passive «spectator» to the active «participant.»

As a flagship selection for SFFILM’s «Schools at the Festival», the film acts as a global classroom for thousands of students. It showcases the profound value of play as a universal language—one that dismantles the barriers of tourism to reveal a shared sanctuary where every traveler can find a home.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER

David Fernández Graña is a Spanish documentary filmmaker and the founder of Banuka Studio. Based in Bilbao, his work is defined by a deep commitment to cinema as a tool for social change and education.

With an observational and humanistic lens, David explores complex themes such as community identity, segregation, and the power of culture to bridge divides.

David’s work is an exercise in listening.

From the Basque Country to the shores of Indonesia, his lens seeks the «human truth» that emerges when we stop traveling as tourists and start connecting as people.

For David, Shifting Courts is a tribute to the community that welcomed him and a legacy for his son, Xabi, a reminder that the world is smaller, and more connected, than we think.
